The success of Mistress Massini in a staying Handicap Chase at Ludlow on Thursday was a nice little bonus at a time when our core team are still on the easy list after suffering from a mild virus. Having been busy in point-to-points for my sister Teresa Clark until June she came into training at the start of December and has been the only one in full work over the past month. Mistress Massini had decent bumper form for us two seasons ago, winning at Ludlow before running well at Aintree. So given her subsequent exploits in points we felt she could be very competitive over fences off a modest mark of 89. She jumped soundly on Thursday before moving into contention on the bend and then pulling clear of Follow The Swallow on the flat. Rex Dingle, our young conditional jockey gave her an excellent ride. She has a couple of early entries including one over hurdles and I will also look for other opportunities if we decide to get her out again quickly. She is owned by The Fountains Partnership – owners of the very talented Fountains Windfall. We decided to give our team a winter break on the advice of our vet early in December after a number of our horses including Ms Parfois and Acey Milan ran well below expectations. They spent a couple of weeks with a daily walk round the roads and are now back doing a steady canter or two. While they seem to be over whatever was affecting them we will not be rushing things and do not expect to have any runners bar Mistress Massini until the end of January at the earliest.

May we take this opportunity to wish all our supporters, and those connected to the yard a very Happy New Year.
