Don Lami got the new season off to a bright start with a bloodless victory in the staying novice hurdle at Fontwell on Wednesday evening.

With one runner pulled out before the race and another falling at half-way it probably wasn’t the stiffest task he will ever face but I was pleased with the way he beat the 112 rated Cintex by a dozen lengths despite idling in front.

It was good to see Don Lami back on track after a disappointing effort last time at Hexham.

He jumped very well at Fontwell and kept on strongly in the closing stages although he still looked a shade green and gawky.

There is plenty to look forward to with Don Lami who could run next either in a staying handicap on May 27 at Fontwell or a three mile novice at Worcester two days earlier. As you can see from his leg stretch this morning he's on good form after the race - click here to watch the video.

We have just enjoyed our best season with 34 winners and £423,333 in prize money at a strike rate of 21% and I felt it was important to record an early success in the new campaign.

We will be quiet over the next few months as usual with a team of five or six for summer jumping while it is exciting to be running Jukebox Jive in the Chester Cup tomorrow, though he could have done with a kinder draw.
