Jukebox Jive took his score for the season to three with a spirited victory from the front in the Class 3 Bathwick Tyres Handicap over two and a quarter miles at Newbury on Friday. He is proving to be a terrific flagbearer for our team of flat horses which numbers just 2 at present (our other flat horse Black Prince runs on Monday at Beverley). Jukebox Jive is owned and bred by Ron Huggins whose colours will always be associated with the brilliant stayer Double Trigger who won the Goodwood Cup a record three times. Ron is a big supporter of the yard and is relishing the success of Jukebox Jive whose dam Sweetheart won the long distance handicap at Glorious Goodwood in 2009 at the age of five. At one stage we were thinking of running him in the same race at the start of August. But he had a pretty hard race in holding off the persistent challenge of Aurora Gray at Newbury and I'm thinking of giving him a little break now before looking for a decent prize in the autumn which will provide a proper test of stamina. It was really encouraging to hear from his jockey John Egan that he had never ridden a more genuine horse than Jukebox Jive. He certainly showed a great attitude at Newbury where the commentator was right in saying he was not for passing. While jump racing remains our core business I am enjoying training Jukebox Jive and  Black Prince so we are keen to increase the yards involvement on the flat through the Summer. Jump racing through this time is a very risky business with injuries to tendons common so it makes more sense to have a team of flat horses for the Summer and let all the jumpers rest up!!
